I can’t let Barack History Month go by without dropping what I feel is the song that inspired Obama’s wildfire campaign slogan, Yes We Can, not to mention Nas’ chart-toppingest single and most positive track since If I Ruled the World. His ailing mom asked him specifically to pen an inspiring song for children and this is what he came up with. Not only inspirational, this song is mad educational if also just plain mad in parts—the Persians never invaded Africa for one thing. Regardless, we’re reminded of grand kingdoms and centers of learning in Africa, primarily Egypt, and their influence on European civilization, which rewarded Mother Africa with the sad legacy of slavery and exploitation. But the song’s more righteous than bitter; it’s hopeful to the extreme, out-hoping Obama, the Pope of Hope himself, a school yard of children sing-chanting, “I know I can, if I work hard enough!” Nas - I Can (9th Wonder Remix) This is a reworked version by North Carolina wunderkind producer 9th Wonder off his whole-album remix of Nas’ God’s Son, God’s Stepson, which is well worth tracking down. This here is the “clean” version (I think “weed” is missing) in case me mum downloads it. (Yesterday was her birthday. Hi mom!) Honorable mention: DFA (aka James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem) remix of M.I.A.’s Paper Planes, which my girlfriend will enjoy cause she likes M.I.A. but not so much the gun shot beats on the original, which are missing on this one and replaced by, you guessed it, singing school children.
