My Top 3

If you’re like me every year you anticipate three things: baseball, Lil Wayne’s new album and finding out a distant cousin you’ve never met has left you $1 million and a lake house in Vermont.  With baseball officially starting today I’m still waiting on the last two items on my list.  I’m sad to say that I’m more likely to receive an inheritance letter in the mail than ever hearing Lil Wayne’s new album, Tha Carter III.  Actually, scratch that, I have heard Tha Carter III, just not all at once and not officially.

How is this possible do you ask? Well, because Lil Wayne has seen fit to release a truckload of mixtapes between the release of Tha Carter II in 2005 and the present.  I’ve actually lost count of how many he’s released, but let’s say it’s about 112.  What’s amazing is that he’s been able to release 3 volumes of The Best Rapper Alive, 3 volumes of Da Drought, 2 volumes of Dedication, 5 volumes of The Drought is Over, 8 volumes of New Orleans Nightmare, and a Weezyvelli album all at least 15-20 tracks and many that supposedly contain tracks intended for his latest officially release.  All of this music has been loved both critically and by the masses and has made Tha Carter III probably the most anticipated album of the year.  I would say Dr. Dre’s new album was the most anticipated, but everyone knows that’s never coming out.  Equally as amazing as his prolific output is the fact that none of these albums make Wayne money.  Except perhaps for The Leak EP he released a few months back that contains 5 tracks that were originally intended for his new album but were so widely known he just decided to release them in EP format.

I’ve loved pretty much all of his releases so far but I’m left with so many questions.  Like, what could he possibly have left written for his official album that we haven’t heard already? How can he possibly release so many songs? How does he record these songs so quickly? Does he live in the studio? Do they increase output by recording what he says in his sleep? Is he ever not on drugs? How does he find time to go by a new pair of shoes or get a ice cream cone at the local ice cream parlor? Will all of these releases hurt Tha Carter III to the point that it’s unlistenable? How long can I keep this question gimic going? I’m already filling up space with meta-questions and this sentence isn’t even a question, or is it?

I guess my biggest question is how will I feel when it turns out Tha Carter III is just a greatest hits of his mixtapes? You know what, I wouldn’t really have a problem with that.  I’d probably be the only person to think so, but his really good songs on his mixtapes have been so good that I would buy them on a cd just to have a hard copy of what I already digitally.

I just don’t know if Tha Carter III will ever come out.  It was supposed to drop in April but my cohort Anthony informs me it’s been pushed back until May…for now.  In any case, here are some videos of Lil Weezy that will hopefully get you as excited as I’ve been the last 3 years.

Lil Wayne - Lollipop

Lil Wayne - Georgia…Bush

Lil Wayne - Interview with Pete Finch

The questions are rediculous and the answers are even better.  My favorite question care of Mr. Pete Finch, “What’s your first real hustle?” I’m going to be the first to say that with hard questions like that we are going to be hearing a lot of Pete Finch in the months to come.

Lil Wayne - Gossip

Notorious MSG - Dim Sum Girl

How’d that get in there?
