The new album “”, is the Roots record I`ve been waiting for since their classic “Things Fall Apart” back in `99!!
I didn`t really feel their last 3 efforts. Game Theory was tight for about 4 or 5 tracks but it left me feeling kinda sad and almost bored by the end of it.
Similar to an Art House flick, I felt there was a tendancy for people “in the know” to rate it even when they didn`t completely understand it, just because it was so heavily politically weighted.
Rising Down has beautiful structure, a seemingly lost art in this day and age of singles and club bangers, which makes it a pleasure to listen to from start to finish.
Mos Def on the ELECTRIC opening title track has me glad that I was born wih hip hop in my blood! I haven`t heard Mos spit fire like this since “Black On Both Sides”. Closing the show with “Rising Up” with my man Wale to me is genius, because it leaves you wanting to hear more of the Roots. Especially if you knew that they were originally going to close with “Birthday Girl”! I`m going to disagree with what the Heads are saying and put it out there that I love all the guests on the album. To me, they compliment Black Thought`s battle style flow instead of “taking away his rhyme time”. After hearing other MC`s, it makes you appreciate Black Thought`s Raw Fire on tracks like “75 bars”.
The super group CRS (Lupe, Pharell, Kanye) gives us their second ever single, in the form of a remix to this track. Listen right here, and watch the video to the original right here.
